Aromatherapy uses essential oils to improve a person's mood or health. The ancient Egyptians used oils, but the practise was only properly developed in the early twentieth century by René-Maurice Gattefossé, the French chemist who came up with the term 'aromathérapie'.
Essential oils can be mixed with a carrier oil, such as almond or wheatgerm, amd applied to the skin, where they are absorbed. Or they can be inhaled from a drop on a tissue or from being burned in an oil burner.
The oils affect the limbic system, an area in the brain which is responsible for emotions, memory and sexual arousal. Most essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin, but you can reap the benefits by having an aromatherapy massage, which can improve circulation, stimulate the immune system and encourage a better state of mind.
Adding a few drops of undiluted oil to a warm bath is another way to unwind. If you need a calming hit while on the go put a few drops on a tissue and breathe deeply.
